Gotta love SEO: Let’s field test this stuff that I’m learning on the job with the “aviation experts.”
I applied to be a “Maven” at one of my favorite online communities, ThisNext.com:
Mavens are the leading and most influential members of the ThisNext community. They are the tastemakers and trendspotters that make ThisNext such an awesome place to be. They find the most unique products from the coolest stores, find them first, and write informative and interesting recommendations.
We created the Maven designation to highlight and recognize these special members of ThisNext.
I wrote my pitch in a one-shot braggadocio and then forgot about it. I did, however, continue to recommend my favorite fashion finds (mostly dresses and shoes, lol) to the site. Then, lo and behold, my welcome email arrived. I’m really flattered and excited but I can’t say that I’m shocked since I really put forth an effort to be the best at what I do… and what I do is shop and network. YEAH, baby.
Visit me on ThisNext and check out my recommends!
Yay, hooray! My family reunion content for BlackAmericaWeb.com has finally launched. Since I’ve only done 4 articles so far (and I’m contracted for 18) I am about to fire up the spirit of the hustle and get those ideas flowing. Oh yes, and I finally have an author page on the site as well. At first I didn’t because I was an employee from 2004 to 2006, but I made an appeal today because of the amount of content I’d be producing for this promo. My profile photo is a smidge different than everyone else’s, but then again, that’s who I am. That photo was taken by a DMN photographer at Fashion at the Park and I absolutely love it. I make sure I credit him every single time!
After many years of “I’m gonna,” I finally took the first big step toward writing my first book. For years I’ve tried to answer the question of how I managed to balance school, work, internships and kids. There was no secret recipe other than my mindset that failure was not an option. So, with that I am composing an as-yet-untitled successful living guide for single parents.
I like those niche finance books like “You’re So Money” and “The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke,” but not only do I feel like they’ve told me very little news, I was frustrated that these titles (and those like them) don’t factor in children. All of the single parent survival guides are targeted to middle-aged divorcees. Nothing against the not-quite-Boomers, but I am part of the gimme gimme generation and I need a single parent survival guide that speaks to people like me.
So I’m writing it here: http://yfnbmommy.blogspot.com.
Once upon a time last month, my aunt who is an avid reader of Glamour came across an announcement that they were searching for regional street teams of “fabulous and highly-networked” ladies to be their GLAMBASSADORS (apparently you can only put that word in caps, lol). I hastily knocked out an application and forgot about it. Yesterday I received this via email:
Congratulations!
You have been selected to serve as a GLAMBASSADOR for the June 2008 – May 2009 time frame.
As a Glambassador, you’ll act as a local representative for Glamour’s promotion department in your city. You and your clique of fashionable friends will get VIP access to Glamour events and offers, and you’ll work with us on local event scouting, promotion and attendance.
We will update you on specific projects and responsibilities each month in an online conference call.
Well, well well! Things are looking up for the newest member of The Fashionistas. Let the rainmaking begin!
Man, oh man it’s been a long time! Despite my absence, there has been writing-a-plenty. I’ve done more work for the Dallas Observer music blog as well as my ongoing gig with Where Magazine. The portfolio has been updated with direct links and PDFs of the new stuff. I’ve also gotten into the swing of writing product reviews on Amazon.com, but those are hardly noteworthy… then again, my review for Sloane Crosley’s “I Was Told There’d Be Cake” got a few helpful votes.
In other news, I was contacted by a colleague from BlackAmericaWeb.com to cook up some family reunion-related content. It’s a welcome challenge because I’m admittedly self-involved and if you’re not one of my usual suspects then I’m probably not very proactive about making contact. I’ll respond to your messages, though! I’m a responder. Speak and you shall receive… a reply.
The BAW family reunion content begins publication next week and the gig runs for about seven weeks. Links to come.
My first post for the Dallas Observer’s music blog was a review of the VH1’s Hip Hop Honors concert featuring the Roots.
After an unfortunately short run in the Dallas area, 80108 Media has decided to pull out of the market. I expect my channel pages to still be viewable, if only through archives, but all outbound texts have stopped.
On the heels of that development, I was recently granted the opportunity to do some entertainment reporting for the Dallas Observer. I wrote for the Observer back in 2005 and I’m excited about the chance to rekindle the relationship. My primary function will be for web-based content, however the door is open to write material for the print edition as well. My hope (as it was before) is to give urban music a more prominent voice in the paper.
My Steals+Deals channel goes live this week. The inaugural message previews the Victory Media Network’s screening of “Grease.” Subscribe to Steals+Deals to find out what the Bliss spa has in store for attendees. The best part–it’s all free–both the Victory Park festivities AND your subscription to 80108.
This week marked my first week as a contributor for F!D. I have two post on the blog, and Friday, I scored a small clip in the Guide. Take a look.
